Do you have a sweet thief in your house?
One day when I was about 10 years old, I remember opening a cabinet in the kitchen and finding a variety of sweet treats. I’m talking a few different kinds of cookies and bags of chocolate. I kept my findings a secret for a bit, knowing exactly where to go when I wanted something sweet, thinking my mom was trying to hide them from my brother and myself. One day, she caught me getting a cookie and started laughing. I apologized immediately, thinking I was in big trouble. I mean it was hidden for a reason, right?
That is when I learned the truth.
My mom wasn’t hiding those things from me or my brother, she was hiding them from my DAD! You see my dad has a sweet tooth. If there are sweets in the house, they aren’t safe. While she didn’t keep all the sweets away from him, she definitely only kept a handful in eye sight. My mom knew by brother and I would want a cookie after dinner, she kept them tucked away so they’d be there when we wanted them. She enjoyed her piece of chocolate each day, which meant her chocolate was also in safe keeping. She looked at this as doing the best for him…and us.
My grandfather was the same way. Yesterday, my mom told me that when my grandparents babysat us, she always made sure to have ice cream in the house for him. He enjoyed a bowl every single night. But because they didn’t want to load us up on sugar, he would wait until we were in bed to enjoy it. If I hadn’t fallen asleep yet, I’d run out of my bedroom as soon as I heard the spoon hit the bowl begging for him to share with me. What is it with men and their ice cream?
Growing up, I thought this was absolutely hilarious, maybe even a little crazy.
Then, I got married and started to see a trend.
I like to enjoy a sweet treat at the end of the day. After six years of marriage, I cannot tell you how many times I went to grab one of my treats and they were all gone. Since the kids are a little to young to have their hands in the cookie jar so to speak, I knew immediately who the guilty party was. Even my Skinny Cow treats, which I really didn’t think hubs would go after, went missing.
That’s when I got it. I knew exactly why my mom kept her secret stash.
I may not have a secret stash in our house (yet) but I have been smarter about what I buy for our after dinner treats. I make sure to buy things that are a just right for you indulgence. Something he doesn’t have to steal from me, something we can both enjoy.
During the hot summer months, we both head to the freezer for our after dinner, kids are finally in bed, treat. I always try to get individually packaged treats, which keep us from eating more than we should. Our go to treat right now are these Skinny Cow Vanilla Bean Dream Ice Cream Sandwiches.
They meet my individually wrapped requirement and are the perfect size for dessert. They remind me of an ice cream sandwich but have an extra layer that added the perfect crunch that many crave. They’re dipped in a thick, velvety chocolatey coating with a chocolate wafter layer and then smooth creamy vanilla ice cream. Dreamy for sure.
The most important thing is they’re husband approved. I make sure to keep enough in the house for us to BOTH enjoy…together. This is usually after the kids go to bed, when the house is quiet and we’re ready to just sit down and relax. We usually head out to the patio, watch the sunset and catch up on our days.
Cheers to summer, two sleeping littles and quality time with the husband!
